The Sports Act
The Sports Act covers:
- Sport and Physical Activity – activities that promote health, movement, and community
- Competitive Sport – organized activities governed by rules and competitions
- Recreational Activities – leisure activities focused on well-being and quality of life
The Act applies to sports associations, clubs, and organizations, as well as other entities that provide sports and physical activity opportunities.
Safe and Secure Sport for Everyone
A key principle of the Sports Act is that sport must take place in safe and secure environments.
This means, among other things, that organizations and associations must:
- Ensure safe facilities and equipment
- Provide appropriate assistance in the event of injuries
- Actively promote safeguarding and well-being, especially for children and young people
- Comply with regulations regarding child protection checks
Clean and Fair Sport
The Sports Act emphasizes that sport in Greenland must be fair, credible, and free from cheating.
Therefore, the Act requires:
- Compliance with anti-doping regulations
- Prevention of match-fixing and manipulation of competitions
- Prohibition of bribery and corruption in sport
Cooperation and Responsibility
The Sports Act is based on cooperation between:
- Naalakkersuisut (the Government of Greenland)
- The Greenland Sports Confederation (GIF) and the national sports federations
- Municipalities and local associations
- Other stakeholders within the sports sector
All parties share a common responsibility to develop sport and ensure favorable conditions for participation.
Sport for Everyone
A fundamental principle of the Sports Act is that sport should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, ability, or background.
The Act therefore supports:
- Participation of children and young people
- Volunteering and community engagement
- Talent development and elite sport
- New forms of sport (e.g. e-sports) as part of societal development
Perspective
The Sports Act is an important tool for promoting an active and healthy society in Greenland. It provides the foundation for everyday physical activity, voluntary engagement, and international participation in sport.
