Funding Principles and Framework Agreement

The Sports Confederation of Greenland (GIF) administers the funds that are made available each year for the development and operation of sport throughout Greenland. These funds provide the foundation that enables associations, national sports federations, and volunteers to create activities, foster communities, and support the development of sport.

Where Do the Funds Come From?

The majority of GIF’s income comes from the Government of Greenland in the form of a framework grant.

• Approximately 97% comes from public grants and gaming revenues.
• Approximately 3% comes from sponsors and project funding.

The funding covers, among other things:

• Administration and operations
• Education and training of coaches, leaders, and instructors
• Consultancy services and travel
• Development of sports activities and participation in international events

How Are the Funds Used?

The majority of the funding is channelled directly back into sport:

• Approximately 80% is allocated to the support and development of national sports federations and sports associations.
• Approximately 20% is used for administration and operational costs.

The funding helps support:

• 9 national sports federations
• Sports associations throughout Greenland
• 10,104 members

Strategic Support

In addition to operational grants, national sports federations may receive strategic funding.

The purpose is to:

• Strengthen long-term development
• Support prioritized focus areas
• Create direction and growth for each individual sport

Funding is provided on the basis of multi-year strategic agreements between GIF and the respective national sports federation.

Transparency and Accountability

All national sports federations are required to submit annual financial statements.

This ensures that:

• The use of funds is properly documented
• There is transparency regarding finances and priorities
• Public funding is used responsibly and accountably

Financial statements must be submitted no later than 1 May each year.
